Gifts of the Spirit--Recongize!

As children of God, we have all inherited some gift or another from Him. Some have more, some less. But we all have something.

I have been thinking about gifts of the Spirit pretty extensively of late, largely because I wish I had a certain one. Let's review them: In the Doctrine and Covenants section 46, the prophet Joseph Smith spoke of these gifts: (D&C 46: 13-26)

13To some it is given by the Holy Ghost to know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that he was crucified for the sins of the world.

14 To others it is given to believe on their words, that they also might have eternal life if they continue faithful.

15 And again, to some it is given by the Holy Ghost to know the differences of administration, as it will be pleasing unto the same Lord, according as the Lord will, suiting his mercies according to the conditions of the children of men.

16 And again, it is given by the Holy Ghost to some to know the diversities of operations, whether they be of God, that the manifestations of the Spirit may be given to every man to profit withal.

17 And again, verily I say unto you, to some is given, by the Spirit of God, the word of wisdom.

18 To another is given the word of knowledge, that all may be taught to be wise and to have knowledge.

19 And again, to some it is given to have faith to be healed;

20 And to others it is given to have faith to heal.

21 And again, to some is given the working of miracles;

22 And to others it is given to prophesy;

23 And to others the discerning of spirits.

24 And again, it is given to some to speak with tongues;

25 And to another is given the interpretation of tongues.

26 And all these gifts come from God, for the benefit of the children of God.

Elder Marvin J. Ashton taught that there are also these gifts:
"[T]he gift of asking; the gift of listening; the gift of hearing and using a still, small voice; the gift of being able to weep; the gift of avoiding contention; the gift of being agreeable; the gift of avoiding vain repetition; the gift of seeking that which is righteous; the gift of not passing judgment; the gift of looking to God for guidance; the gift of being a disciple; the gift of caring for others; the gift of being able to ponder; the gift of offering prayer; the gift of bearing a mighty testimony; and the gift of receiving the Holy Ghost."

With such an abundance of gifts from our Father in Heaven, surely you recognize one or two in yourself, right? Don't be fooled by the falsehood that 'you have no talents.'

I think it is oftentimes difficult to identify our gifts, for fear of being thought of as prideful. Whom are we serving if we choose to hide our gifts, or to deny them when others point them out? We have these gifts, as Joseph taught, for the benefit of the children of God. We must use them according to how the Spirit guides us, and I personally don't believe Heavenly Father wants us to keep them a secret. Sure, we don't need to yell about it from the nearest hill, but let's at least acknowledge what God has given us!

So let's open the door of the gift closet and let ourselves out. Hello. My name is Devon, and I have the gift of teaching wisdom and knowledge. I am a teacher by education, and a darn good one, thanks to that gift from God. I have recently also been given the gift of empathy due to my son's health issues. I wish I had the gift of faith, but that is another post.

What gifts do you have from your Heavenly Father? How can you use them better? Don't be shy, now!

The One

Archibald McPhail left Scotland at the age of 40, to join the saints in Utah.

He and his family were a part of James G. Willie's handcart company and Archibald was made a tent captain. Each night, Archibald and other captains would go after the stragglers - bringing them safely back to camp.

There were two elderly sisters who walked together, usually two of the last to arrive in camp. One night, only one sister returned to camp. Archibald went out, as he had many, many nights before - leaving the 99 in search of the one. He found her on the frozen banks of Strawberry Creek. She was cold, she was alone and she didn't feel she could cross the creek on her own. So, she had sat down to die. Archibald crossed the frozen river, picked her up in his arms and carried her back to safety.

On his way back across the river, the ice broke and Archibald was soaked to his waist. By the time they reached camp, his clothes were frozen to him and he never recovered from his chill. Archibald McPhail died just three days from entering the Salt Lake valley.

I often think about the sacrifice my husband's third great-grandfather made to rescue the one... the unnamed sister. So many people around us are in need of help crossing life's frozen creeks. Are we willing to sacrifice for them? Odds are, we won't have to die for them. Are we willing to live for them? Will we give of our time and talents? Will we seek after the one?

Let's Be Honest...

Life as a mother is challenging to say the least. Children come as a blessing and a curse in their first breathe at life outside the womb.

Responsibility of new life and family demands pounds down like icy hail on a mother and seems to let up to a light rain and eventually sunshine, the more we become accustomed to our role. The optimal point comes when we can learn to love the sweet and sour times equally, right?

Often times, as each must have its opposite, Satan gains a powerful tool over our views of motherhood as soon as we begin to doubt our divine role, our abilities, and the proven knowledge and love we have for our children. How easily we can be made to feel like we are less then Mrs. Motherhood-is-easy-for-me across the street who seemingly cooks a 7 course meal and braids three heads of hair simultaneously. Though this is not true, we convince ourselves we are failing in our God-given opportunity to raise children and begin to view all our efforts in vain. How critical we can be on ourselves and soon the sour parts of mothering outweigh the sweet.

Have you found yourself in this very spot as I have?
How do you stay positive, invite and nurture the sweet... even through the sour?
What are your tricks of the trade for loving your daily grind and strengthening yourself as well as your family?

General Conference Question Challenge

My freshman year at BYU was the first time I really watched General Conference. I hadn't spent much time with it before, probably due to having to go to the chapel to see it (I'm lazy).

In preparation for General Conference weekend, my Book of Mormon teacher, Brother Parker, gave us a challenge. He told us if we prayerfully considered 3 personal questions we wanted an answer to, they would be answered somewhere during one of the sessions. I thought and thought, and I could only come up with one: TV had just recently started doing ratings, and I wanted to know what the church thought about them--which ratings should we avoid, etc.

General Conference morning, I headed to the basement of my dorm (in my jammies!!) and got settled on a couch. Hoping to hear Brother Parker's promise fulfilled, I listened for my answer.

And it came! I distinctly remember one of the Apostles (I think it was Elder Scott) looking into the camera and saying something along the lines of, "We do not need a ratings system to tell us what is right."

Wow.

Brother Parker was right! I had a carefully considered question, and it was answered.

Every General Conference since that time, I have put this to the test. Sometimes I had three questions, oftentimes just one. This time around, I have one REALLY big one I need answers to. I am sure, due to my past successes, that I will recieve what my Heavenly Father wants me to know.

If you're looking for a way to spice up your General Conference, give this a shot! I pray you have the same amazing experience I have time after time!

The Lord's Anointed: Elder Jeffrey R. Holland

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland was ordained a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 23, 1994. At the time of this call, Elder Holland was serving as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy, to which he had been called on April 1, 1989.

From 1980 until his call as a General Authority in 1989, Jeffrey R. Holland served as the ninth president of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He is a former Church commissioner of education and dean of the College of Religious Education at BYU.

A student leader and varsity athlete at Dixie High School and Dixie College in his native St. George, Utah, he received his bachelor and master degrees in English and religious education, respectively, from Brigham Young University. He obtained master and doctor of philosophy degrees in American Studies from Yale University.

Elder Holland was born December 3, 1940 to Frank D. and Alice Bentley Holland. In 1963, he married Patricia Terry. They are the parents of three children.

Quotes/Stories

I loved Elder Holland's recent conference talk about the atonement of Jesus Christ. Here is one of my favorite quotes from that talk:

"Brothers and sisters... because Jesus walked such a long, lonely path utterly alone, we do not have to do so. His solitary journey brought great company for our little version of that path—the merciful care of our Father in Heaven, the unfailing companionship of this Beloved Son, the consummate gift of the Holy Ghost, angels in heaven, family members on both sides of the veil, prophets and apostles, teachers, leaders, friends. All of these and more have been given as companions for our mortal journey because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the Restoration of His gospel. Trumpeted from the summit of Calvary is the truth that we will never be left alone nor unaided, even if sometimes we may feel that we are. Truly the Redeemer of us all said: “I will not leave you comfortless: [My Father and] I will come to you [and abide with you].”"

Another favorite talk is from his April 2007 address:

"...The sin of verbal abuse knows no gender. Wives, what of the unbridled tongue in your mouth, of the power for good or ill in your words? How is it that such a lovely voice which by divine nature is so angelic, so close to the veil, so instinctively gentle and inherently kind could ever in a turn be so shrill, so biting, so acrid and untamed? A woman’s words can be more piercing than any dagger ever forged, and they can drive the people they love to retreat beyond a barrier more distant than anyone in the beginning of that exchange could ever have imagined. Sisters, there is no place in that magnificent spirit of yours for acerbic or abrasive expression of any kind, including gossip or backbiting or catty remarks. Let it never be said of our home or our ward or our neighborhood that “the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity … [burning] among our members.”"

quotable quotes: a lawyer joke

A young lawyer, fresh out of school, came into town and asked,
"Do you have a criminal lawyer here?"
The reply came, "We think so but we can't prove it."

Prayers Requested

I have a fantastic cousin named Rachel who writes a blog called No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane. She's a devout Christian who writes about her life and family and interests in a way that weaves her faith into the posts. I recently met her at a family reunion and she's even more lovely and fantastic in real life - if that's possible!

Anyway, a few weeks ago Rachel started 'Monday Prayer Requests'. Basically, anyone can email her - anonymously or not - and ask for prayers for whatever in their life they need extra help with. I must admit, I'm a bit jealous I didn't think of this myself; I think it's an amazing idea! I would encourage all Mollys and readers to go to her site on Mondays and leave your prayers there. I know in my life how strong the power of prayer can be. I know it can work miracles, heal broken hearts, comfort, strengthen, and give you power you never knew you could tap into.

If you'd like to submit a prayer request, email her at justaspoonful@gmail.com and watch the miracles work!

Natures' Reminder

This past weekend I had the opportunity to venture to Bryce Canyon National Park. Where inspiring vistas, romantic hiking down through the red rock spires, and nature surrounded me at every turn. I could not help but be thankful for this little niche on God's Earth and tangibly feel his all encompassing love for me... just me, the little person sitting on the edge of the Rim Trail soaking up His Sabbath sunrise.

How often do we go about each day without noticing or feeling of His great love all around us? How often do we forget that even though we are small, we are great in His sight?

As fall approaches in my neck of the woods, winter will be shortly around the bend and life will be covered in snow until the first buds break a thin layer of white in March. Join me in soaking in all the natural beauty we can. It truly is a measure to feel Heavenly Fathers' love for us from the tiniest flower petal to the towering red rocks.

I'm so grateful for His majestic beauty that He so generously displays on the face of this Earth. Grateful that he allows me a partial glance at His greatness, and my own greatness, when I take up the opportunity to head outdoors. Heaven knows the winters are long and I am going to need a good reserve in store!

Have you harvested your reserve?

By Study And Also By Faith

Seek learning, even by study and also by faith (D&C 88:118)

I will continually seek opportunities for learning and growth.

I was repeating to myself the Young Women’s Motto, and then read the value experiences and projects and it reminded me of my days in Young Womens. Those years were a bit rough on me, and I remember my Young Womens president wasn’t very understanding. What she didn’t understand was my feelings and had she asked, and had I thought she really cared, we probably would have been at least friends.

I actually had my goals finished within the first few months of becoming a Laurel. None of the other girls were as far ahead as I was, although we had several girls that weren’t far behind me. I always had my Young Women’s goals done early. From the time I entered as a Beehive to the day I walked in as a Laurel, I had a plan and I knew I would finish my goals way ahead of anyone else. For me it wasn’t beign first, although it was a nice feeling. Really, I loved setting goals and achieving them.

So, when family circumstances made it so that I needed to help out my mom with her primary class occasionally, which meant not going to Young Womens, I knew I was in good standing with the Lord, but, I also knew that I was NOT in good standing with the Young Womens President. Our personalities clashed, I didn’t feel like she really cared for me, and so when push came to shove…I really didn’t care what she had to say.

As I look back on those years, and all the years in between…20 years plus, I think about then the journey to today, and how I lost that passion for setting and accomplishing goals. I also wonder how things may have been different had I felt more important to my leaders.

As an adult, wife, and mother, and thinking in these terms, I wonder how I strayed so far from being such an avid goal setter. I believe Knowledge is not just the knowledge we learn from books, and going to school. Knowledge is all those things we pick up along life’s travels. What knowledge have we gained that may help others? Are we studying the scriptures? Are we seeking opportunities to learn and grow? Are we seeking them continually?

I would suggest we all ponder those questions for a moment, and then take action where needed.
I leave with you my testimony, that this church (the gospel) is true, and that our Heavenly Father loves each and every one of us. I love you, and I know that as we band together as sisters that we can conquer anything.

Amen.

Mindful Molly

Eating the Genealogy Elephant

I come from a family of genealogy and family history loving people and one of my first memories is being in my grandmother’s house, looking at the pedigree and family group sheets lining the hallway. My Grandma told me wonderful stories about my ancestors and she also taught me how to figure out how people were related to me. I loved learning about 2nd cousins once removed and all the rest. But, as much as I love genealogy, I don’t love hallways lined with paper. I honestly wasn’t sure I ever wanted to be that person with the room full of boxes full of papers full of information. And yet, I was truly interested in what was on those papers... And then something wonderful happened. The personal computer was invented. As soon as genealogy programs started to come onto the scene I was interested. I began to enter my data with enthusiasm and I also began to help others by showing them how exciting it was to have everything on one little box.

In 1998, I was tasked with the project of scanning old family photographs onto the computer. I found myself completely overwhelmed. What was I to name them? Where was I to store them? How was I to connect the people in the photographs to the people in my database? Would it ever end? How could I eat this giant genealogy elephant? As I sat in my office feeling overwhelmed a scripture came into my mind. The scripture is found in Matthew, 10:30 and it says, “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” I felt a sense of peace wash over me and realized that I was not alone and that this work is indeed finite.

But then I started wondering, how would I number the hairs on someone’s head? I figured the easiest way would be to divide the hair into small sections and then count each small section one by one and under close observation. Looking at the entire head of hair would be overwhelming, but sectioning off a little at a time would be almost exciting. I learned that I could eat the genealogy elephant just like any other elephant - one bite at a time! And so my genealogy system was born.

I call it Eating the Genealogy Elephant and you can use it FREE at http://www.elephanteating.com/.

I'd love feedback as you use it because I know there will be problems. I've been teaching it for several years, but writing it all out is much different than talking it all out. So, check it out and let me know what you think!

Make some noise!

I have been trying to get into better physical shape. I have spent a lot of time studying the Word of Wisdom and praying to better live it. This goal was brought into sharp focus when, this summer, my husband was diagnosed with Type II diabetes.

John told me one day, shortly after diagnosed, that he had read a Samuel Johnson quote that he really related to, "The realisation that one is to be hanged in the morning concentrates the mind wonderfully." This has been particularly true for our family over the past few months. Our collective minds have been very concentrated on living a healthier lifestyle.

In addition to eating healthier, we have been exercising quite a bit. I LOVE to swim and with a broken rib and sprained ankle (it was a heck of a Summer), I found that swimming was good physical therapy for me. I also realized that this was an excellent time for me to work on one of my New Year's resolutions from 2008. Yes, I said 2008. Better late than never.

While swimming, I was reminded of author, Madeleine L'Engle, who memorized and quoted scripture as she swam each day. One of my resolutions from last year was to memorize some scripture, poetry and quotes and so I printed out my first piece and put it in a sheet protector on the edge of the pool where I would have easy access.

I have found great joy in combining a workout of the mind with a workout of the body. I have just finished memorizing the Relief Society Declaration and have started on Nephi's Psalm. But, while swimming my laps a few weeks ago, the world suddenly got in the way. It came in the form of 80s music.

I was a teen in the 80s and admit that I have a difficult time not singing along with Cyndi Lauper. I was swimming laps in an empty pool and the music was cranked really loud. I was trying to focus on my memorization, when all of a sudden, "Time after time..." Ack! I sang for awhile, giving myself a break from the arduous task or memorizing. But, soon I found that minutes had gone by and I had lost focus. I began to say the theme softly, as I always had - but couldn't hear myself or focus over the music. So, I started to speak louder and pretty soon I found that I was practically shouting the words as I swam. It worked and the music faded into the background. I was back on track.

Satan would do anything to see us all "hanged in the morning." His goal is our destruction. He is making a lot of noise - like that crazy baseball chatter, "hey, batter, batter, batter..." And, it is easy to get distracted by things that are fun, but empty - whether it be doughnuts or Dire Straits (not that either of those is necessarily bad in moderation). But sometimes we need to focus and we can't get completely away from the noisy world and find a quiet place. I learned that during those times, I can drown out that worldly noise with a joyful noise of my own!

Living Providently - More than just food storage

When I was recently called in to the Bishop's office and called to be my ward's provident living specialist my first thought was- "food storage... canning... Pretty basic I can handle this..." then I got home and got to thinking.

What does being "provident" really mean? The dictionary defines it as careful and sensible; marked by sound judgment, careful in regard to your own interests, exercising or characterized by foresight- much more than putting away a couple of months of food.

Provident living I am starting to learn is not so much a thing you do but a way of living- A couple of words in the definition really stood out to me:

CAREFUL - SENSIBLE - FORESIGHT

It is so easy to get caught up in the world and when things are going good we often forget the rainy day that could be just around the corner.

Provident living is food storage and gardens, but it is also making wise decisions; building our savings, paying off and avoiding debt, living well within our means, preparing for emergencies, continually furthering our education, preparing for uncertain times, and teaching our children and families these principles.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand and the wise man built his house upon the rock and we all know what happened when the rain came down.... So what are you building your house on?

The only problem I run across is the price never fits into my budget. Our newest sponsor Zinney Lou Totes gives you great prices with amazing quality!

With over 20 different designs to choose from, you can also order them in virtually any size! From scripture tote, to Young Women or Primary bag, all the way to a diaper bag! How cute is that?!

The scripture totes are a perfect gift for yourself or how about for a young lady just moved into Beehives? How about for a new convert? How about a lovely gift for your visiting teachers, or those you visit? Don't forget to check out the Young Women and Primary totes. Perfect for a new calling so you don't lose your papers (and your head)!
