More

My heart has been pretty full the last little while. As many of you know, my son has a rare neuromuscular disorder--one that will, someday, take his life. We have been privileged to be in contact with other parents whose children are afflicted with this disease. While that is in so many ways a blessing, in other ways it can be truly heart-rendering: I get very attached to these children, and when one of them passes, it is hard, as well as a sickening reminder of my child's mortality. Well, that happened this past week...one beautiful, perfect little girl went home.

Why am I telling you this? Yes, it's depressing. And unpleasant to think about, especially at a time of year when we should be rejoicing. I personally have a tendency to get caught up in the packages and tinsel and Christmas music, and I make of that my Christmas. This year, though, it is so much more. I need it to be more.

I need Christmas to be the virgin mother delivering in a stall. I need it to be that tiny, precious, perfect Child who came to fix everything. That Child through whom we are delivered from death and the pain of separation. That Child who loved us enough to come and enable us to be with family members forever, not just for now.

My heart is hung on that hope. It is reflected in the evergreen tree symbolizing eternal life, and in the lights hung upon it, symbolizing the Light of the World. We give each other gifts to typify the gift He gives us: resurrection and reuniting with family. If nothing else, Christmas this year for me will be a celebration of the Christ Child's gift of not letting this life be all--that when my son and I are separated that I will see him again.

And I am so grateful for it.

What does Christmas mean to you? How are you helping make it more than commercialism?

Reflection

Facebook lends its users a peek into the thoughts and lives of their friends or loved ones. Each day as I 'check in' on my home page, I'm uplifted and encouraged by updates that my good friends share. Many get me thinking. My friend Rachel recently posted this thought and it had my mind racing:

I'm going to start following my baby's example and give myself a huge smile every time I look in the mirror.

Tell me that does not make you smile just thinking about trying it?
Can you imagine the impact on our spirits by this simple act alone? We would most likely feel a giggle rise from the tips of our toes to our eyebrows- just like a baby.
We may recognize more closely our beautiful skin- whether wrinkled with wisdom or not; our nose- pointed, crooked or flat; eyes so magical that they sparkle with the happiness of God's creation; our lips would be turned up at the corners and ready to spread the joy onward. A reflection of our own smile might help us more fully feel the measure and connection of our spirit within our body and marvel at, appreciate, and feel blessed for the uniqueness which was created in us.
Have you given yourself a much deserved, if not needed, 'huge smile' in the mirror lately?

Mary, Mother of Jesus

When the virgin Mary was made aware of her pregnancy, she journeyed to the home of her friend Elizabeth who was pregnant with John the Baptist, and there sot comfort and acceptance in her condition. Upon her return home she was further along in her pregnancy and sure to face opposition.

During this season through my mothering years, my mind has often reflected on Mary's possible emotions, her mortal worries and fears surrounding her condition, and on bearing and rearing the Son of God while barely being espoused to Joseph in her society. No doubt her belief in God, her acceptance of His divine role for her, and carrying the Christ child bolstered her faith and drove her onward.

Her example of faith was evident in her conviction to "fear not" when the threat of stoning followed her for conceiving out of wedlock. When she awaited Joseph's confirmation of his divine role as Jesus' earthly father. As her and Joseph made there arduous trek to Bethlehem, the Holy City, to seek refuge. And finally, when at the moment of delivery, lying in the only shelter that could be found, she suffered through the pains of child birth knowing that the Son of God, the Prince of Peace, would begin his mortal ministry on this Earth being born in a stable.

How blessed we are for the example of fortitude and more importantly, the faith of Mary. For her devotion to her calling as the Mother of Jesus Christ. My heart is full of gratitude for her sacrifice in the birth, life and death of her Son and her role as His mother. May we cherish and immulate Mary's faithful example at this Christmastime and always.

quotable quotes: what Christmas is all about

From the New Testament:

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great bjoy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. - Luke 2:8-14
Or the Old Testament:

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. - Isaiah 9:6
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Dainty Wildflower

When it comes to youthful affairs of the heart
Though my loves have been but a few
It doesn't take prideful impressing by him
A sweet romance will always do

When I reflect upon the wildflowers
On the path on which I go
Makes me ponder much of simple times
When hearts would let young lovers know

"To determine the worth of a goodly man"
Said the lass with a delicate air
"A dozen long-stemmed roses from he
will determine the perfect pair"

One shan't judge a book by its cover
but in roses the belief isn't so thought
Crimson passion, pink child-life fashion,
Gold-flamed petals be eternally sought

If I were to discern a future fellow
by a flower yellow stained
For a life of selfless giving
Only a friend could I take his name

The most delicate rose, it's white shining remains
the pure, untouched bloom could very well claim
Loving devotion for a righteous eternity's bliss
Temple covenants pledged with no shame

Yet as I admire on this heavenly day
God's creations well aged and fresh new
I yearn for eternal companionship
A worthy mate living life, loving true

My eyes don't need sight of rare flowers
Money has only Earthly concern
I gaze at each delicate wildflower bud
Simplicity has caused my wild heart to turn

Sincerity's flower will win my true heart
To a man whose devotion's unmarred
Who strives for Celestial perfection
and to me plucks up one dainty wildflower

***

There is a very specific reason I chose a waterfall instead of a wildflower for this post. It was written when I was 16, while hiking around Silver Falls State Park in Silverton, Oregon. It was an incredibly gorgeous day, and despite all my jaunts to Silver Falls....I recall this day as the most beautiful. I walked off the beaten path a bit near South Falls, sat on a large mossy rock, pulled out my notebook, and was immediately touched with the inspiration for this poem.

I am a certifiable hopeless romantic. I can't remember ANY time in my life where I wasn't "in love" or had a crush. I idealize relationships, foolishly look past faults, and let my heart grow attached very quickly. I love seeing people in love...the tender glances, the affection, the chivalry, the exploding smiles and blushing cheeks. When I played kissing tag in elementary school, kissing was gross to me...I liked it because it gave me the chance to be kissed. I love to be "in love." I am completely in love my husband now, but that does not diminish the emotion that I have felt in the past for other men. While some girls grow up dreaming of their ideal fairy-tale weddings, I didn't really put much thought into it. I just wanted a man to love and cherish me for the rest of my life.

I wrote this poem intending to give it to my future husband on my wedding day. But the notebook got tucked away in a box at some point, and I forgot about it. I quickly married in my first year of college, and five years later it ended in divorce. All the hopes and dreams of eternity that I'd idealized for years were splintered, and I wondered if I'd ever find a man that would make me as happy as those youthful dreams.

Around the time I met Taylor, I found the poem and let him read it. His response was so generic....something to the effect of "Yeah, that's pretty good." Taylor's sweet and romantic in his own way, such as the numerous love mix CDs he made while we were dating. He probably didn't realize how important this poem was to me. I was upset, so back into a box it went until I uncovered it this week.

I think I now dedicate this poem to the IDEA of the love I wanted for my future; the idea that inspired me to hold fast to my chastity. There have been many bumps along the road, many selfish jerks and users. I've been a selfish user. I've had my heart broken and I've broken hearts. As an adult, I believe that the sum of all the love from those broken hearts has given me the capacity to love more. I am more patient, more forgiving, and a better parent.

Tennyson said, "'Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all." To this thought, I heartily agree.

Fabulously Easy Holiday Recipe

Just in time for all your Holiday entertaining, I have discovered the easiest and yummiest dessert that looks beautiful to serve to company.

And the best part - it couldn't hardly be easier. That is my kind of recipe for a busy holiday season!

Tres Leches Cake

1 yellow cake mix
1 C. sweetened condensed milk

1 C. half & half

1 can evaporated milk

1 quart whip cream

2 T. sugar

Make the yellow cake in a 9 x 13 pan as directed. Mix the above milks together. When cake is cooled, poke with holes (wooden spoon works well).

Mix the three milks together with a whisk in a medium bowl. Pour the 3 milk mixture over the top and let chill in refrigerator for several hours.

Before serving, top with topping cream, whipped with the 2T. sugar.

We served this at our ward Christmas party to 250 people and it was a huge hit. I signed up to bring one to the party, that's how I ended up with this fabulous recipe. I couldn't believe how easy it was to make - and how YUMMY it is!

Enjoy!

Wonderful Winter

Where I live winter is long.

Long, dark, bitter cold, full of smog and down right miserable. I'm not the first to admit winter is my least favorite season. Fortunately, natures trade off for enduring winter hardships are her other seasons: spring, summer and fall. No waking up early to slip and slide to a snow drenched car only to have my covered hands, nose and ears lose feeling and threaten to fall off in a matter of seconds. No slippery roads and crazy drivers. No back breaking shoveling. Yes, each year when winter harshness fades into spring, I have found myself happily anticipating the arrival of three seasons of bliss!

Over the last ten years I have wished winter away. Ignoring all of winter's goodness and focusing on its negatives have not elicited an attitude of gratitude, but rather, an attitude of annoyance- hatred even. This ungrateful attitude was beginning to transfer over to other areas of life, challenging my faith, and creating an unhappy, slightly annoyed, ornery me. Knowing that winter would once again make its yearly return, I had to make a conscious decision that I was going to change my attitude. I was bound and determined to love winter. With all it's annoyances, I was once again, like I did as a child, going to be grateful for winter and enjoy it's bounty. All of it. The good and the not so good.

My attitude for the upcoming months has improved. I've found myself eagerly awaiting snow to pour from the skies. For the sensation of flakes falling on my face while trying to catch at least one on my tongue. For the cold outside air so I have a good excuse to make a baked sugary treat, snuggle in my blanket and have a read-a-thon. For hot chocolate coating my stomach after enjoying magical snow time with my children. For exhilarating rides downhill in the toboggan, peaceful ski lift journeys, sailing down groomed mountain slopes, snow angels, and my new favorite- snow shoeing. Winter cannot come soon enough.

Having an attitude of gratitude about winter has worked so well that this morning I even found myself thankful for the cold air just so I could appreciate the sun's rays as they streamed in through my kitchen window and warmed my face.

Bring on the snow!

With this attitude change, I'm reminded of the scripture passage 2 Nephi 2:10-11 &15 in the Book of Mormon where Lehi is speaking with his son Nephi, and explaining how opposition is a necessary part of eternal laws. It's true that to each, there is an opposite. Just as the seasons and their parts are opposites. The most integral part is that to truly enjoy the good, we must be grateful for the opposite of that good. Grateful for the bad and how great it makes the good! My winter attitude of gratitude is just a minute example of how embracing this principle of opposition has helped me look forward to winter and is precisely how I plan endure it.

How has having an attitude of gratitude helped you in your life?

Three Kings Found the Lord

My favorite holiday story is The Fourth Wise Man. There are different versions of it, but the one I know and love tells the tale of a man named Artaban. Artaban was supposed to meet the other Wise Men when the star proclaiming the Savior's birth appeared. They had a plan to travel to the birthplace of the Son of God and present their precious gifts of gold, frankinsense, myrrh, and several large jewels that Artaban would bring. When the star showed, however, Artaban was late, and the others went on without him.

Artaban, unwilling to give up, followed the star on his own. He came upon a town where Roman guards were taking the children under 2 years old, by Herod's decree. Artaban, hearing a muffled cry from one of the houses, entered and found a woman there, hysterical and clutching her baby. A Roman soldier soon came and tried to enter the home, but Artaban paid him off with the huge ruby he had been saving for the Savior, thus saving the child's life. He took comfort in knowing he still had an emerald, a diamond, and a pearl to give to the Savior.

The rest of the story goes on to tell of Artaban's travels, and how he found more people to help, each time sacrificing one of his gifts for the Savior. At the end of his life, he arrived in Jerusalem, on a day where a man named Jesus would be crucified. He was saddened to hear of it, but did not know that Jesus was the man whom he had been seeking for so long. At one point Artaban heard a disturbance behind him. He turned to see a soldier trying to take a girl from her parents. When questioned, the soldier revealed that she had been sold as a slave by one of her parents' creditors. Artaban, with his last precious jewel, paid the debt the parents owed and liberated the girl.

At that moment, there was an earthquake--for this was the moment the Savior died--that made a wall to fall on Artaban. In his dying moments, he despaired that he had never found the Savior and given him his gifts. But right before he passed away, he heard a voice saying "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." In all the ways he had served and loved others, Artaban had indeed found his King.

Each year at this time, I am reminded of Artaban and his quest. I am always pulled, no matter how far I am spiritually from where I should be at the time, to launch my own journey to find the Savior. I am hoping to find Him this year through loving service to my family and by stilling my harsh temper and quick tongue.

Michael McLean's The Forgotten Carols speaks of this quest in one of the songs, assuring us that "three kings found the Lord, and so can we."

So let's find Him. How are you planning to find the Savior this Christmas season? What gifts will you give him? Do you have something you do to help you feel closer to the Savior at this time of year?
